Social Security and the Debt

Posted By on May 30, 2006

In today’s Salt Lake Tribune Congressman Rob Bishop and Senator Bob Bennett argue entitlement programs “like Social Security” are to blame for the deficit, not a Republican lack of fiscal discipline. Senator Bennett points to his plan to rework Social Security as evidence he has attempted to deal with the growing deficit crisis.

Perhaps it’s time someone pointed out to the Republican members of Utah’s Congressional delegation Social Security is still bringing in more than enough money to pay for itself. It is not only NOT contributing to the nation’s growing debt but helps finance it as the Social Security Trust Fund’s surplus is invested in US Treasury Bonds.

While Senator Bennett may argue cutting pork is a “bridge to nowhere” it is a far better place to start than cutting a program that currently pays for itself while keeping millions of American seniors out of poverty.
