My Letter to Orrin Hatch
Posted By JC Carter on September 19, 2007
Jeff asked me to post this. Yes, I actually emailed this to him via his website… so if I disappear tomorrow, you’ll know I’m getting the 3-squares at Git-Mo:
Dear Senator,
I am greatly disappointed and, in fact, disgusted that you are not supporting Senators Leahy and Dodd’s efforts to restore Habeas Corpus. Habeas Corpus, as you should know, is a cornerstone to our legal system, and a right that has been eliminated for many citizens in the name of national security. Detaining a foreign national without the chance to appear before a judge or hear the charges against him or her is one thing, to do that to an American citizen is both despicable and shameful. There have been several cases since 9/11 where a fellow citizen has been detained without being allowed to hear their charges or proclaim their innocence to a judicial body. If one citizen is denied a right guaranteed to them by the Constitution, then what hope do any of us have of being guaranteed that right?
It really surprises me that you would support security over freedom (because that’s really what it boils down to for me). I wonder if you would support such violations if your own culture were under suspicion? Not likely? What if Warren Jeff’s followers were to take up arms to liberate him, thereby committing an act of terrorism? Outside of Utah the distinction between so-called Fundamentalist Mormons and members of the LDS faith does not exist. Could you support a Utahn being detained without Habeas Corpus based on alleged connections to this group?
I hope that you will cease this partisan action and reconsider supporting the restoration of Habeas Corpus. Granting a citizen, no matter the evidence, their guaranteed rights will not “bring the terrorists over here” as you fear, rather I believe it will stop them from gaining any more power in this great country.
Regards,
JC Carter

Outstanding!
Btw – he won’t pull a snatch and grab on you, but you CAN expect delays if you fly anywhere from now on. Seriously. I flamed him once, and I’ve been ‘randomly’ picked almost EVERY TIME since. >:(
Well,I do loves me a good strip-search, puts me in the right mood for my flight.
Wow, that’s an impressive email. I think we should all write emails to our Reps and tell them exactly how we feel. If I can get around to writing it in the next day or two, I’ll post mine, as well.
