This one is more for me than for you. My son has a cover of the song in the first video from some goof ball band (Gary Jules) he listens to, and I told him that it was a pretty good cover. Cover? he asked. Yeah, it’s a cover. Tears for Fears did it in, like, 1983. We listened to both and he claimed that the cover was better ’cause Tears for Fears was just too old. And that’s the story of how my kid got grounded from his iPod again.
So, an amusing story from the WIKI:
The band’s name is derived from the Primal therapy treatment of the same name developed by Arthur Janov, which was made famous after John Lennon became Janov’s patient. While undergoing primal therapy, a patient is encouraged to “re-experience” his early, dramatic emotional states (even perinatal ones), including screaming like an infant, hence the expression “tears for fears”. Orzabal tried primal therapy in the early 1980s, although Smith never did, and neither returned to the treatment after that time.
In a 2004 interview with VH1 UK, Orzabal and Smith said that when they finally met Janov in the mid-80s, they were disillusioned to find that he had become quite “Hollywood” and wanted the band to write a musical about primal therapy.
Funny, eh? Therapy is always good for a laugh.
This one reminds of when Dennis Miller was still funny.
And this song will always be great

At the risk of dating myself, I have to confess I always liked these guys.
I was excited a few years back to discover they were still recording, and the new stuff wasn’t all that bad. I mean it was no “Shout”, but…
I’m old.
I bought their 1983 album with money from my first job.
I feel embarrassed to say this, but I didn’t know Tears for Fears was the original artist of this song….
And, you really grounded your son from his iPod because he thought Tears were too old? That is too funny!
HE doesn’t like U2, can’t wrap his head around Stevie Ray Vaughn, thinks Hendrix is boring, and denies that Clapton is God.
I think he’s doing the pot or something, because that kid just isn’t right in the head.
do you take requests for afternoon’s tunes?
and did you find that coldplay song? did i lose your email in my spam folder? it’s possible…
There’s still hope for the kid. I remember my 17 year old (now 22) sister telling me how any music from the 90’s sucked because it just sounded old. Now, she not only listens to stuff from the 90’s, but she’s also hooked on the 80’s. Then again, “retro” is “in”. *sigh*
Well great, now my week is shot. I had to dig out my Tears for Fears cds for a listen, which led to a rediscovery of the Eurythmics (who I never liked much then, but decided were quite good yesterday) and some Toad for Wet Sprocket.
Resisting the urge to peg my jeans.
