“Militantly” Progressive and Proud Of It – More Amazing Commercials That Wont Air In Utah

Posted By JM Bell on November 15, 2007

My wife had this idea a few years ago: Re-branding The Democratic Progressives and Liberals with PSA’s instead of holding “1 vs The Rest” arguments at family functions (you know, Holiday tradition for we leftists in Utah). It was a great idea. It’s still a great idea, and, as with all good ideas it had two problems:

1. Money (lack of)

2. Interest (for Utah)

From Think Progress I poach the following about a new campaign from the Center For American Progress and the Glaser Progress Foundation:

The Center for American Progress, in conjunction with the Glaser Progress Foundation, recently launched a multi-year effort to increase public understanding of what it means to be a progressive given our nation’s history and the challenges we face today.

The first part of the campaign involves a pilot experiment to begin defining progressivism in the public’s mind through a series of distinct advertisements that explain the progressive movement’s core values and policy ideas, its historical accomplishments, and its philosophical differences with conservatives.

This is a great idea, and, better yet, the spots are leaps and bounds better than the crap that comes oozing out of the DCCC and DSCC offices. Those ads are horrible (even though I am so good at making THEM)

So, let me show you a couple of the ads with a small commentary about the differences between “Progressive” and “Militant Progressive”.

In this one, I would have added a part about winning the War on Terror by actually winning the War in Afghanistan where the terrorists that attacked us on 9/11 live. But, that’s just me. It seems our current foreign policy is to lose Afghanistan and stalemate in Iraq.

This one’s simple. A Militant Progressive would have an electric guitar with a mild distortion and a flange pedal, none of this “spooning on a rainy morning, drinking tea” folk guitar stuff. All kidding aside, these ads are great. I’m working on getting permission to use the ads next year if we, Utah’s Progressive Army, can raise the funds to air them. No use grabbing donation money away from Obama or some other candidate if we can’t even use the ads, right?

Jason over at the Sidetrack has a really good, much deeper view on this issue HERE

Words can’t express my giddiness at getting behind something like this. Please keep us informed of fund-raising efforts, or ways we can help out!

Also, here are a couple of articles I can’t seem to stop thinking about or linking to, regarding “realignment” and “identity definition” within the progressive movements.

Also sorry for using the word “giddiness” here. But still, giddy.

Taking note of your use of the word “giddy”, I feel I must point out that you are “progressive” but not “militantly progressive.”

To be militant, you would have had to have used a word like “bloodthirstiness” or “near-violent dedication,” instead of “giddiness.”

very interesting, but I don’t agree with you
