FISA News – Utah Democrat Morgan Bowen, Congressional Candidate, Says No to Retro-Active Immunity
Posted By JM Bell on July 2, 2008
In a year when the field of Democratic Candidates in Utah leaves me feeling uninspired, the two men running for Congress in the 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts are keeping my pulse rate up.
Morgan Bowen, Democratic Candidate running against Rep. Rob “Invisible Congressman” Bishop, took a very strong stance on Bush and Rep. Matheson’s retroactive immunity wishes for telecom companies who broke the law because Bush decided to once again disgrace the Constitution.
From Bowen’s Blog:
Benjamin Franklin said “Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”
As a candidate for the United States Congress, I oppose granting retro-active immunity to telecommunications companies – who willingly broke the law, when so many others refused to do so – and the illegal wiretapping of American’s on the notion that no entity or body of government is above the law, according to our Constitution. While we do face serious threats to our national security, I believe it is possible to combat these threats without the erosion of our most basic liberties, and the protection from an invasive government body that the founding fathers made great efforts to include when drafting the Bill of Rights. This administration’s and our current congressman’s thinly masked agenda to grant retro-active immunity and remove oversight from the surveillance process is not so much about protecting American’s from realistic threats, but rather protecting this administration, and the representatives who supported them from accountability and their sworn duty to uphold our constitutional rights as American citizens.
Thomas Jefferson wisely said: “When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.”
It is time our Utah values of respect for the United States Constitution, liberty, and a just and free America are defended once again.
This. Is. Inspirational.
Bowen is really on the ball here. He’s setting himself as an example of strong, patriotic and responsible leadership. Good Job, Morgan! You deserve SOME POSITIVE NOTICE from anyone, in any state, that cares about changing the un-American, un-Patriotic behavior of the United States Government.

Jeff, get a grip on reality. Morgan will lose 31% to 59% or worse. Bennion Spencer will be lucky to crack 20%.
In regards to FISA, when Obama is our next president, will you be just as vocal in opposition when he is fully informed of the threats, and asks for the same tools as Bush?
Captain Mark
PS I will be willing to take a pie in the face for any Democrat victory over a Republican incumbent. That’s how sure I am about things in Utah not changing. How about you, are you willing to put your face where your blog stands?
I’m already vocal in my opinion of Obama’s stance on FISA.
I am inspired by the Democratic Candidates in UT 1st and 3rd CD’s. I am NOT inspired by prediction sent to me by pretend pirate captains.
Now, if you’re asking me to take a pie in the face if a Republican wins in Utah, you’re obviously as nutty as we all pretend you are. LOL.
Bennion Spencer at 20%? Geesh. Go look at Democratic return in the 3rd CD over the last few cycles. Even the knee jerk vote dem vote is above 21%.
Arrr, there be the truth of it matey. I knew you didn’t have the chops to put up or shut up. We both know there be smooth sailing for Admiral Huntsman, Commodore Shurtliff, and Yeoman Ellis. Captain’s Bishop and Chafetz will send broadsides into their respective opponents. Your favorite DINO traitor will sink Captain Dew, but Dew is outgunned as we all know. So where do you and your scalawag crew think you can take down a ship of the GOP fleet? Give me specifics and lets sign articles that if ye succeed in sinking an incumbent officer of the GOP Navy, I will take a cream pie to the face on your show. But if ye fail in your endeavors, ye must take a broadside of pie from the Captain.
Mark
C’mon, Mark. As long as the legislators continue to allow the cowardly single party ticket vote, that’s a sucker’s bet.
If we lived in a town that had a press pool less interested in $$$ and GOP loyalties, and focused instead on issues and histories, I’d take the bet.
As long as the media gives credence to funds raised equaling candidate viability, then, again, it’s a sucker’s bet.
More issues and less bullshit.
So ye be striking yer colors there matey? As far as them scalawags in the press, they all should be made to walk the plank, especially Bob Bernick. He couldn’t get a quote right if it was handed to him on parchment and wax sealed.
Arrrr
Captain Mark, with a ‘k’ you bilge rat
Striking my colors? Nah.
Placing limpet mines, grudgingly giving into your nautical theme, on their keels. The problem is, the fuses (the State Party) seem to be defective…
Wow, Mark. That “it’s an uphill battle so why try” attitude get you many places in Utah politics?
For everyone else out there with a bit of fight left in them, Jeff speaks truth here. These two guys are worth keeping an eye on.
So there are the choices. Get involved in changing the political landscape in 2008, or the Mark Towner Downer Club. Take your pick.
The same offer is made to you Jason. Put your money where your moth is matey
You want him to put his money in the overhead light?
Always good quality info from this site!
