Sorry...been a little busy. Privatized space travel is a joke. The physics of getting a human into orbit are completely different from going up touching "space" and then immediately returning. But you never hear about this from the privateers. Do people ever wonder why Virgin Galactic doesn't look as robust as the space shuttle? That is because these ships are not experiencing the same forces required to reenter at orbital speed.

And sure private contractors put together much of the current space program but there is still a unmatched infrastructure at NASA that brings together the various components and makes sure they work. Mistakes have happened but the bottom line is that without the investment made by the American people we would still be waiting for private enterprise to even entire space let alone actually go to the moon.

It must really piss of Republicans that there are actually things that we as a society can come together to accomplish. Wonder what other great things we could accomplish, say energy independence, there is a nice start, and I can dream, can't I?

Yep, there's always someone out there looking to diss the private sector whenever possible.

"Public" space travel has had its share of disasters as well, including two space shuttles (Challenger and Columbia) as well as Apollo 1 (pre-launch).

Don't forget that most of the design and construction work for the various U.S. space programs were carried out by private contractors. I guess if the government had designed and built the equipment there never would have been a Shuttle or Apollo disasters, right?

Anyone still think privatized space travel is the wave of the future? If they can't get dead people into space how are they going to get live ones.
