I think by now that you kind readers know that on KSL - NEWSRadio, in 168 hours of programming, there is one hour a week dedicated to Progressive (they say liberal) Politics. ONE HOUR. The “Clean Colon” infomercials get ten times the airtime I get.
Obviously, KSL has a liberal agenda. Right? While you spit milk through you nose on that ludicrous statement, let me move on…
According to a press release I received this morning, the media in Utah is too Liberal (this is based on the assumption that, just because they’re Republicans, the Legislature must not be held accountable by media or criticized in any way, especially not by Joe Cannon’s Republican Party Deseret News-letter).
K-TALK, in an effort, I suppose, to become more banal and mediocre than KNRS, has announced the following announcement, in preparation, once again, for bankruptcy:
Listen to Utah’s newest, most insightful political radio talk show:
Inside Utah Politics - Setting the Record Straight
Saturday mornings from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
K-TALK 630 or online at http://www.k-talk.comWhere every Saturday morning Utah Conservative Politicians expose the local liberal media’s erroneous stories during the past week and defend elected officials from all political persuasions who are unfairly treated by the media.
Right … except Democrats, of course, who, while in a super-minority, unable to press a veto, control all the power, are to blame for every screw up, and control the media, already have an outlet through their Zionist media minions, right?
In the first program, conservative legislators Howard Stephenson, John Valentine, Margaret Dayton, Steve Urquhart, Greg Hughes, John Dougall and others will provide what really happens in the Utah Legislature.
Regular features include The Grammar Guru, Economics 101 - From the Mouths of Babes, Conservative Book Report, Political Bloopers, Little-known Personal Tales of Elected Officials
o For those who are tired of sissy garden shows on Saturday mornings
o For those who want Red Meat Radio
o For those who want the Truth about Utah Politics directly from Conservatives in public office
o For those tired of getting their news filtered by the liberal local media
o For those who want Inside Utah Politics, Setting the Record Straight
Really? Stephenson (repeal the constitution), Valentine (head in sand[Buttars]), Dayton (xenophobe), Urquhart (*I like solar, but don’t tell Jason Chaffetz ), Hughes (no idea) and Dougall (worst. blog. ever.[except for mine]) are the jockey team for show number one. Wow. That certainly covers all elected political persuasions (except for Democrats [see above]).
I’ve got 2 bucks that says show #1 is either devoted to verbally kicking Bob Bernick in the nuts (hey, guys, Joe Cannon runs that paper … shouldn’t you get him on the UT-GOP hotline and yell at him?) or to perform a verbal fellatio on Mitt Romney and express their sorrow over his getting beat out by a GIRL! One dollar side bet hedging the use of either “Obama bin Laden” or gratuitous use of his middle name “Hussein.”
Look, I know I’m being a huge douche bag about this, but, come on! Republicans in Utah acting picked on and oppressed? With a straight face? Are you kidding me? You guys have no sense of shame, irony or, for that matter, self awareness.
I’d laugh if this weren’t so patently pathetic.
*Changed due to a previous inaccuracy.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI’ll bite. When did I say or suggest that the rejection of vouchers had anything to do with voter intelligence?
You can pin a lot of things on me, but I don’t think I’ve ever believed or expressed the standard Rebecca Walsh line of “voters are too dumb to vote correctly” (which, after all, would be a silly thing for someone elected by the people to say).
I hope that the radio show is a good chance to talk directly with the people. We help make a lot of decisions in Utah, and it’s always exciting for me to try to get around the media filter.
1. You’re right. I changed it. Bloggers are too dumb, not voters.
2. I can’t see this media filter as anything other than a fiction in the minds of the super-majority. As the former CD of the USDC, I know first hand how nearly impossible it is for the “liberals” to get a fair message in the Utah Media.
Two examples:
a. Veteran’s Day 2005, the USDC held a giant press conference on the formation of the USDC Veteran’s and Military Families Caucus, problems with the state VA, veterans who were getting hosed by the national VA, and two pieces of veteran / military family legislation being offered by Rep. Cosgrove and Sen. McCoy. Big to do, really.
On your side, Hughes grabbed a couple of guys from the VFA and talked about a bill he wanted to run that, if memory serves, was weak, silly and little more than resolution.
Hughes got 95% of the cycle. The Dems got “Utah Democrats held an event as well.”
b. When the Senate GOP basically told McCoy that his bill would stall in committee BECAUSE it was his bill, it got NO press at all.
McCoy’s bill was a forward looking college assistance program for the family members of killed or disabled service members.
McCoy knew how important the bill was and handed it off to a Republican to run.
Again, NO PRESS.
Cosgrove’s bill, as you recall, was for Family Counseling for military family members with spouses returning from combat theaters. The bill provides for what to expect, how to adjust and how to ease the transition to stateside life, among other things.
It passed through committee unanimously.
It passed with overwhelming numbers on the floor of the House and Senate.
Who get’s quoted? GOP leadership who had spent nearly the full 45 days of the General Session trying to take the bill away from Cosgrove, or table it because he’s a Dem and had a better idea than you flag waving hypocrites.
No press on that.
NOW, Cosgrove’s bill is now being looked at as a model for Federal reform in VA system.
Again, where is the press on this?
This is the tip of the iceberg and you full well know it.
Liberal Media in Utah? Please.
The reason you Republicans get in the paper so often is because there are a shitload more of you. You are, as a group* not well behaved, not well led, a lot like the City Council in Footloose, vindictive, petty, whiny, overbearing, led by the nose by Gayle Ruzika, rude, mostly ignorant (International Baccalaureate, anyone?) , nearly always arrogant, allergic to ethics reform, opposed to opposition of conflict of interest, anon, anon.
So, yeah, from time to time, you get a couple of pieces of bad press and BAM, you cry, and gnash, and whine and tantrum all the while screeching your dumbass, Hannity TP of “Liberal Media.”
This latest round? Your collective panties are in a bunch because, basically, Bernick is such a lazy reporter that he used old quotes, old information and out of context interview pieces where a current topic is mentioned.
I understand being miffed at Bernick. I don’t understand why you’ve let Deighton off the hook (dual byline). I most certainly, and vigorously, find inane and laughable your claim of Liberal Media in Utah.
Get your party to clean up their act, set some real Ethics Reform, elect leadership that leads by example and not punishment and you’ll get back to the fawning press you want.
When Joe Cannon’s Republican Party Deseret News-letter is taking swings at you, you might want to take a couple of steps back from your megalomaniac viewpoint of the world and see it from the viewpoint of everyone else.
—
* Of course I know it’s not every member of the GOP. This is your image. This is why your party is spending money on that inane I CAN campaign, even though you still dominate the state elected offices.

PS: That solar project in St. George is very cool. Thanks for pointing me at it. I can certainly admit when I’m either ignorant or wrong, and, in your case, I was.
A blatant example of the type of Republican bad behavior Jeff is talking about took place during the voucher battle last year when Sens. Bramble/Valentine and Rep. Hughes were openly declaring their intention to ignore the results of the referendum and go ahead with vouchers anyway. That was so obviously slimy that I still have trouble finding sympathy for Republicans when they actually are wronged as they were by Bernick.
It is quite likely that Bernick’s inaccurate story would never had happened (it would just be too unbelievable) if there weren’t so many recent and obvious examples of Republican efforts to subvert the political process fresh on Utahns’ minds.
We can only hope that Steve presents himself in as well informed manner as he does on his blog… because that is something Utah really needs…
This is ridiculous, but not at all surprising. The “filter” Steve refers to is local media without an original idea, and bloated reps. with nothing new to say and no motivation to accurately inform the electorate. Now with 10,000 Watts!
I call it the “sludge” moat.
Steve,
“Media filter”?
Politicians like yourself would NEVER filter or spin the info you give the public, right?
Sometimes when politicians complain about the media it’s because the media provides accountability and objectivity that some politicians cannot accept. Where would we be without a critical media prodding, questioning and pressing accountability?
And yes, the media sometimes screws up (please don’t make Rebecca Walsh the standard), which is why blogs are GREAT. I’ve enjoyed reading your commentary on the DNews and Bob Bernick lately. You’ve made accountability a two way street.
Well said, Tom.
That was very well said, Tom. (And JM — some very good points, as well).
The media clearly is a filter — but, as you say, it can perform a clarifying, enlightening role. I love media. And, fortunately, media is getting worlds better, with average Joes like us throwing in our 2 cents — and, in the process, taking eyes away from legacy media that refuses to engage.
These are really pretty cool times, and I remain optimistic that governance and politics will improve with more sunlight.
JM, you keep writing, and I’ll keep correcting.
Not to derail the thread, but exactly how is KNRS mediocre? I understand that you disagree with it’s conservative lineup. But divorce politics from things like broadcast professionalism, success, and ratings and you’ve gotta admit that KNRS’s lineup is stellar.
Their news team has won several awards in the last few years, and the morning “local” host, Lonsberry, handles himself pretty well (if you can stomach the voice).
I’ve never heard your show in KSL (I think K-Talk runs those colon cleanse infomercials during your slot and I never miss those).
I have heard you subbing during Nightside. I’m not a fan of Doug Wright heir-apparent Ethan Millard. Dude needs to learn how to spit his point out in less than 5 segments.
Other than that, programming has made some great moves with Nightside. The show’s production is also spectacular.
But Hannity aside, I really don’t see KSL as Republican Radio. It’s definitely a Mormon family values bastion, but not as overall politically conservative as you make it out to be. Politically, it’s more wishy-washy lukewarm, can’t-ever-pick-a-side blah. There is that weekend show with Republican what’s-her-face, but she’s about as interesting as a colon commercial.
