That Liberal Supreme Court [myth]

Posted By JM Bell on December 2, 2008

Over the last holiday, I got into a bit of a snit with a relative* about the make-up of the Supreme Court. He was of the opinion that Obama would be replacing the “conservative minority” on the bench for more liberal judges.

I said, with disdain dripping in my tone, that his Sean Hannity talking points were so far from reality that I felt the best solution was for him and his kind to be rounded up and shipped off to one of Jason Chaffetz’s tent cities until he either pulled his head out of his ass or agreed to be relocated to some other country where his ignorance would be celebrated (Alaska). The Court has a Conservative Majority, hands down, and that most of them had been appointed by Republicans.

Sadly, when he asked me which ones were, I could only answer that Stevens was appointed by Ford (because anything Ford did makes me giggle).

Today I saw this on AmericaBlog:

John Paul Stevens, 88 (Ford)
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 75 (Clinton)
Antonin Scalia, 72 (Reagan)
Anthony Kennedy, 72 (Reagan)
Stephen Breyer, 70 (Clinton)
David Souter, 69 (GHW Bush)
Clarence Thomas, 60 (GHW Bush)
Samuel Alito, 58 (GW Bush)
John Roberts, 53 (GW Bush)

Only 2 of the 9 were chosen by a Democrat.

2. Of the 9. Conservative Minority? This is the kind of proof that only a Conservative can blissfully ignore.

Just because a judge was appointed by a “conservative” doesn’t mean that the judge is a conservative. David Souter is a good example of that.
