This week on The LEFT Show, Jake and JC join Forrest and I in the studio to chat about everything BUT Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s not that we forgot – we were well aware what day it is, but, there is nothing we could possibly say about Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. that hasn’t already been said by other, more articulate and serious people. Take this day and reflect about why this man’s name is known to so many Americans, and the terrible reality that made a man stand up, speak out and ultimately die to do the right thing for ALL the people in America.

This week we cover a lot of ground – from mocking the Log Cabin Republicans, to a newer, bigoted, hate filled “Constitution.” We sadly talk about the suicide of another LGBTQ youth, Eric James Borges and repeat the important message – Call for help 866-488-7386. We spend a few minutes taking parting shots at Jon Huntsman and Rick Perry. We talk about how Newt Gingrich is all in favor of child labor in this country, but how Fox News and the other Republicans don’t want summer jobs programs for teens because President Obama thinks they’re a good idea. We spend a good chunk of time on total government capitulation on SOPA, and how another chunk of American rights are going away without a fight.

And, most importantly, The LEFT Show hands its very coveted endorsement for the GOP Nomination to … the greatest candidate of all time in the history of the United States of the Frakking Universe.

There’s something about Christmas Season that makes the majority of good, God-fearing Republican folks go all sentimental – reveling in nostalgia for happy remembrances, to mourn for the dearly departed, or to build a towering rage against the audacity of the different, the poor and the ethnic.

Merry Christmas?

The War on Christmas– that invisible fiction with which right-wing crazies warm their paranoid narcissism – has readied those who chose anger, hate and bigotry as their festive holiday garb to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, Love and Tolerance – Jesus Christ.

Happy Hanukkah?

The Eight Nights of Hanukkah – The festival of lights – always a stone in the shoe of those who fight on the pretend frontlines against the War on Christmas. They claim to love to children of Israel, but only to perpetuate the Armageddon in their book of Revelations. The Festival of lights is not a celebration of their GOP Jesus – and therefore Happy Holidays remains the coded phrase of the enemy.

Kwanzaa, Maybe?

To new, too confusing, too ethnic. Every good Republican knows that Jesus only loves the descendants of European whites – Why else would he have made South Carolina or Tennessee? Kwanzaa is a festivity for African-Americans to celebrate the season without shame or fear of embracing their history, their culture, and themselves. This is secular and therefore should not be allowed.

When the founders wrote the constitution – their original intent was to form a country that was inclusive for all the people of the world. There were mistakes, and there were missteps but the original intent was clear – America is a place of safety – a land of freedom – a country where the different is free to BE.

There are too many people in this country using a false and hate-thirsty Jesus as a weapon against those that have failed to give genuflection to their bigoted ideology. We have become – against the advice of Franklin Roosevelt – a country ruled by fear.

I have a hard time finding Holiday Spirit – let alone Christmas Cheer – when members of my human family are under attack. I do not care for the Republican tone that Freedom of Religion means freedom for American Right Wing Christians to persecute, target and hate in the name of a of a Christ that they seem unable to respect, let alone worship.

I hope this holiday season, when so may of us seem aware of our better selves, that you can find the courage to stand up to oppression, to fight against bigotry and to embrace that most important of Christian teaching, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

From the whole family here at the left show, I want to wish you a happy stack of whatever the hell you want to call the holidays.

That wacky Mike Winder, formerly of the Summit Group (he had the class to quit that job) but still the mayor of West Valley City (no class there, sadly) got himself caught cheating the system – namely, The Deseret Morning Republican Party Newsletter system, by writing rave reviews about the town he mayors under a fake name. With a skeptical eye and and little trust for a guy who quits the job with a few clients for being a gigantic embarrassment, but won’t quit being mayor with tens of thousands of constituents because he’s an elected republican – and everyone knows that in Utah, you can’t qualify for office if you have an ounce of political shame – something else is wacky. Namely, Wikipedia. Bear with me … it’s not Watergate or a teenager in a hot tub – but, well, there it is:

Interestingly, Mike Winder’s Wikipedia page was created by user “Biddenden.” [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Michael_K._Winder&action=history]. Biddenden is an English town where John R. Winder, a Utah Pioneer, was born [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biddenden]. The wikipedia user Biddenden, also did a number of interesting posts, namely adding Mike Winder’s book to the “Presidents of the United States” page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States), adding Mike Winder as “Notable Alumni” from Taylorsville High School (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylorsville_High_School). User Biddenden has since been deleted from Wikipedia.

Letter to Students from Penn State Administration on Kiddy Sex Cover-Up – well, kinda

Dear Students—

We all have been changed by events in the past week and a half. In distinct ways, each of us is different than we were before. Yet no one has been more profoundly affected by these events than the victims themselves. We can only imagine their pain and promise to do all we can to support them and prevent such acts from occurring again. The collective commitment of our University community to this cause can be nothing less.

Yet for all the change and pain that have surrounded us, our University remains true to its core values in pursuit of its fundamental purposes. At the very center of those values and purposes resides you—the students of Penn State. And the extraordinary student experience that you have known, both in the classroom and beyond, continues unabated.

We all are saddened and perplexed by the incongruity between our University’s core values and purposes and the excruciating details of the alleged crimes. We are frustrated by others’ misperceptions of us, which are based on the actions of a few. The actions of students who took to the streets and did damage in State College last Wednesday, for instance, contrast starkly with the spirit and character displayed by thousands of students on the Old Main lawn for the candlelight vigil last Friday.

Among the 96,000 lives that comprise Penn State’s student body, there are great variations in age, circumstance, ambition, talent, and perspective. That diversity enriches our University. It is a source of our strength. But now it also includes diversity of opinion about who was right and who was wrong, who should go and who should stay, what should have been done and what should be done next.

Each of you will have your own opinions, and you should feel free to share them in appropriate and constructive ways. But all of us—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—must be unified in our determination to remain true to the guiding principles that bind our learning community. There can be no wavering from respect for individual dignity. There can be no shortcut around integrity. In all we do, we must demonstrate responsibility for ourselves and others. And we must honor society’s expectations for us as expressed through laws or University policy. Never have these things been more true.

Investigations into these matters, both internal and external, will go on. The news media will hover, slip away, and return occasionally through the coming weeks and months. The deeply disturbing and sad details that comprise both fact and fiction in this instance will continue to emerge. They will slowly drip into the public realm. We cannot escape that outcome.

Even so, we must return to the business at-hand. We must ensure that the University continues to teach, conduct research, and serve our communities. And you must invest yourselves in the wonderful process of learning and engaging in student life beyond the classroom.

Our University will find its new path toward even greater success than it has known one step at a time—one class, one lab, one concert, one service project, one day at a time. In the coming weeks, we promise to share useful insights with you related to these matters as they come to us. Until then, know that abundant support services exist to offer any help that you need. The links below provide access to those resources.

Together, we will pass through these difficult days and move forward as one University geographically distributed, but together in spirit and purpose. You are at the very center of that spirit and purpose, giving our University its fundamental resolve. We are very grateful that you are.
